Scent Profile: Dark Espresso, Glowing Orange Peel, Smoky Atmosphere, Warm Woods, Skin Musk

Afterglow XX was an interesting journey for me because my first impression wasn't exactly what I expected. I'll be honest—the dark espresso comes in hot right out of the gate, and for my personal taste it was a little stronger than I anticipated. I thought I'd immediately fall in love with the coffee note, but initially it overpowered some of the other elements in the profile.
The magic happens once the scent settles down.
As the espresso mellows, the rest of the profile starts to shine. The glowing orange peel adds a subtle citrus brightness that works surprisingly well against the darker elements, while the smoky atmosphere and warm woods create this rich, comforting backdrop that keeps pulling you back in for another sniff. The coffee never completely disappears either—it hangs around in the background throughout the wear, occasionally stepping forward to remind you it's there without dominating everything else.
One thing I found particularly interesting was the skin musk. I'm honestly not entirely sure what skin musk smells like on its own, but there's a unique funkiness woven into this scent that adds a little extra character and complexity. It gives the fragrance a certain zest that helps separate it from your typical coffee-forward scent.
The opening actually reminds me of something from my childhood. If you've ever smelled freshly roasted coffee beans, you'll know what I'm talking about. There's a slightly caramelized, almost popcorn-like aroma that fills the air during the roasting process. My dad used to roast coffee beans in the garage, and you could smell it throughout the entire house. The beginning of Afterglow XX captures that fresh-roasted coffee experience incredibly well.
As for longevity, I'd put it in the 4-5 hour range. It's a little more subtle than some scents in my collection, but honestly I don't find that to be a negative. Reapplying once throughout the day isn't a big deal, especially on days when you're active. After swimming, I was reapplying anyway. I also noticed the butter seemed a bit lighter in scent concentration than the oil, so I added a little extra oil into my nighttime butter application and really enjoyed the results.
Now let's talk about the product itself.
Small Batch Beard Co absolutely knocked it out of the park with their carrier blend. The beard feel is phenomenal. The oil absorbs quickly, keeps my beard soft, and leaves both beard and skin feeling incredibly hydrated. You can tell a tremendous amount of thought and chemistry has gone into these products because the performance speaks for itself. The butter complements the oil beautifully and together they leave your beard feeling fantastic.
I also have to give a shoutout to the bottle design. This was my first experience with the pump-style tops they use, and honestly, I think they're superior to droppers. A couple pumps gives a consistent amount every time, it's quick, it's clean, and there's no guesswork involved. Droppers certainly have their place, but if more companies switched to this style, I wouldn't complain one bit.
Overall, I'd rate Afterglow XX a 7.8/10 as a scent and the oil itself a 9.5/10. While the fragrance wasn't necessarily a personal favorite from start to finish, it was a refreshing change of pace and became more enjoyable the longer I wore it. The product performance, beard feel, and overall quality are absolutely top-notch.
Don't sleep on Small Batch Beard Co. Their products are genuinely worth checking out, and if you're curious about their scents, they're well worth your time and money. If you're grabbing a couple oils, don't forget to use code TSA20 for 20% off orders over $40. Two oils gets you there pretty quickly, and based on my experience, you won't be disappointed. 🪵🍊☕
